Reviews
The Notsuke Peninsula is a wonderful place, including this scenery. This vast sand spit terrain was very nice and worth seeing.
It looks like the dead firs will be completely gone soon.
Even though it was already mid-September, I was bitten by a large number of large mosquitoes, and the itching was extremely painful.
According to the locals, the outbreak had subsided considerably a week ago, but it seems to have suddenly flared up again.
If you visit when it's warm, it's best to take precautions against mosquitoes.
shiretoko lake and todowara are must visited places in the eastern side of hokkaido
I went for a walk and the weather was perfect.
The first time I visited here was in the 1980s, and compared to then, most of the withered fir trees are now submerged in water, and the area is just an empty wetland. It was said at the time that Todowara were destined to disappear, and that is exactly the case now. It is ironic that a splendid building called the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center was built even though Todowara had almost disappeared. It's worth seeing just for the vast wetlands.
Super recommended! The strange feeling of being in the whole body of water... The surroundings are so peaceful, I really want to stay like this forever, because it is so beautiful here... After leaving, I began to look forward to visiting in a winter season and seeing the ice. Beautiful view of the line!
When I came here three years ago, there were fewer standing and withered Todomatsu trees than in the tourist guide's photos, but this time almost all of them were gone.
The sandbar itself is thin and thin, and I don't think there is much time left to enjoy the feeling of being at the very end.
I guess it is nature itself that changes its shape from moment to moment.
The sight of a 100-year-old Sakhalin fir forest dying and withering due to the influence of seawater gives us a sense of the eternal flow of time and the powerlessness of humans against the vastness of nature. It is said that it is only a matter of time before the Todowara disappear not only due to weathering over the years but also due to ground subsidence. As of October 2023, when I visited, I could only see around 10 trees at the tip of the wooden path up close while walking along the walking path from the nature center. Considering the effects of recent abnormal weather such as storms, it is thought that it will disappear in the blink of an eye. If you want to see Todowara with your own eyes, we recommend that you visit as soon as possible. The walking path is about 1.6 km one way, and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk slowly each way. It is recommended that you walk along the way while enjoying the vast scenery of the flowers, the sky, and the clear and rainy weather. If you're lucky, you might even get a close look at wild Ezo deer grazing on grass.
I came here for the first time in 30 years.
The power of nature is scary, isn't it?
I was surprised to see that there were only a few of the Todowara that used to be abundant (...;)
